New Windsor sesquicentennial
anticipations exceeded
The Times Record June 25, 2007
|
|
New Windsor's 150th
birthday was opened with a tour of homes Sunday, June 24. The
overcast weather certainly didn't dampen the spirits of those
who participated. Lines of enthusiastic sesquicentennial
celebrators formed outside of the nine homes which took part in
the celebration. Smiles, handshakes visiting with friends not
seen for a long time and just enjoying small town life seemed to
be the point of the day. It was everything the sesquicentennial
committee had hoped for -- a remembering and reliving experience
for those who live in, had lived in or want to live in New
Windsor. After the
Tour of Homes, Dale Whiteside entertained early arrivals at the
park with his humor filled story telling which was highlighted
with intervals of banjo picking and mouth bow music. After a
performance by Kathleen Gibson & The Amazing Invisible Jitterbug
Band, the winners of the New Windsor Public Library Essay
contest were announced.
Essay results: Elementary
division -- Elizabeth Waltz, first place; Christi Anna Willems,
second place; Annie Althaus, third place.

Schaubroeck, second place; Jacqueline Riddell; third place.

New Windsor men charged with
theft of various items
QC Times May 3 2007
NEW WINDSOR, Ill. — A stolen golf
cart and two all-terrain vehicles along with numerous tools have
been recovered with the arrest of two New Windsor men.
Michael Shull, 42, and Michael
Owen, 18, are being held in the Mercer County Jail with
preliminary hearings set for May 14. Shull is being held on
$40,000 bond and Owen is in custody on $50,000 bond.
Their arrests followed two search warrants at 201 Main St. in
New Windsor.
“We received information of a possible stolen golf cart being
held at this property,” sheriff’s investigator Bill Glancey
said. “In the process of executing the search warrant we
recovered the golf cart, two stolen all-terrain vehicles and
some construction site material, mainly tools and lights.”
After a second search warrant was executed at the address,
thousands of dollars of construction equipment, tools, and lawn
and garden equipment were recovered.
The items were stolen from Henry County, Rock Island County,
Galesburg and Davenport. Additional arrests are pending.
Authorities said the two ATVs were taken from Triple E Sales in
Orion and the golf cart was stolen from Ted’s Boatarama of Rock
Island.
One of the ATVs was valued at $9,500 with the other at $4,000.
Glancey said both were still in the crates. The golf cart was
valued at about $4,000.
Both men are facing three Class 3 felony counts of possession of
stolen property.

Ashleigh Torres explores Iraq
The Times-Record April 25 2007 |

|
Ashleigh Torres
shoots introductions to her television news stories at the
Flinstone house, built by Saddam Hussein for his children and
grandchildren. The location is on Forward Operating Base Slayer
right across from the Victory over America Palace in Baghdad. |
|
PFC Ashleigh Torres, 21, 7th Mobil Public Affairs
Detachment, says her life has taken a 180 degree turn now that
she is a broadcast journalist in the Army. She is currently
serving in Iraq. So why did is this
former New Windsor girl join the Army and end up in Iraq?
"Why not," she said. She has nothing but
praise for the efforts given by all the soldiers working in
Iraq. She sees her job as one of giving recognition to the
soldiers and making their lives more meaningful. "The soldiers
are doing such a fantastic job," she said.
She considers New Windsor her hometown, even though she left the
Sherrard School District with her father, Arthur Torres, after
her junior year in high school and ended up graduating from
Sharyland High School in Mission, Texas. "I grew up in
Illinois," she said, in a telephone interview on Tuesday, April
10, 2007.
She said that her job now is producing Cav
Country, which is broadcast on the American Forces Network and
to overseas military installations. It can also be found on the
Pentagon Channel and on the Internet at www.cavcountry.net. "I'm
producing our T.V. show," she said. |
